Cancer screening across Africa

Making cancer screening accessible to every community.

Screen Africa International works to save lives across the continent by expanding access to cervical and prostate cancer screening, through education, advocacy, and stronger healthcare systems.

The scale of the crisis

Problem Statement

Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rates of cervical cancer in the world[1], with about 177,000 new cases and 77,000 deaths annually.[1] Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Ethiopia, and South Africa, part of Sub-Saharan Africa, have screening coverage of less than 10%.[2]

Prostate cancer tells a similar story. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in the region[3], with about 86,000 new cases and 49,000 deaths every year, yet it remains far less studied and far less screened for than it should be.[3]

Prostate health

Caught early, it's often treatable.

Prostate cancer is one of the leading cancer killers of men in our region, and most men are diagnosed too late.[4] Caught early, it's often treatable, and we offer free prostate screening to make that first step easier.

100,000 Projected annual deaths from prostate cancer in Africa by 2040, more than double the 47,000 recorded in 2020[4]
Diagnosed late Most cases here are found late, when the disease is already aggressive and harder to treat[4]
Higher risk Men of African descent face prostate cancer earlier, and in more aggressive forms, than other populations[5]
$10 A PSA screening test can cost as little as US$10 on the open market. Through us, it's free[4]

Our mission

To save lives by closing the screening gap.

Millions of people across Africa face significant barriers to cancer screening, including limited healthcare infrastructure, financial hardship, lack of awareness, and geographical challenges. Many cancers are still diagnosed at advanced stages, when treatment is harder and survival is lower. We work with communities, healthcare professionals, governments, and international partners to change that.
